India Essay - 12/6

There are many things I learned in this unit about India. I learned about the harass lifestyles they have living in the slums, dealing with poverty, and human trafficking. I also learned about some important locations in India such as Bollywood, Bombay/Mumbai, the Taj Mahal, and the Babri Mosque.
India is home to many, with about 1,173,108,018 people. It has the world’s second largest population. More than 75% of this population lives in poverty. The Human Development Report of the United Nations ranks the countries of the world by poverty. It ranked India 119th out of 169 countries. India also has many people living in slums or shanty towns. Shanty towns are slum settlements of impoverished people who live in dwellings made from scrap material often sheets of metal or plastic. Many slums do not have proper education. They have school in a small room which is crowed by students. Dharavi is the largest slum in India and in the world. Dharavi is one unending stretch of narrow dirty lanes, open sewers, and cramped huts. Sadly, it is home to more than one million people. Another cruel issue in India is human trafficking. Human trafficking is like modern day slavery. People trick others into working for them under their harass conditions. Men, women, and children are forced to work in brick kilns, rice mills, agriculture, and factories. Children are forced to work as factor works, domestic servants, and beggars. Beggars sit on the streets and beg for money. Some masters hurt their beggars so they would look more pathetic and get more money. Girls are sold at a young age and suffer with diseases such as HIDS or AIDS. Girls are sometimes forced into the circus and forced to marry their masters. They can even sold by their parents or masters if money if needed. As you can see, India is a very poor county and will do anything to earn some money.
We learned about important locations in India such as Bollywood, Bombay/Mumbai, the Babri Mosque, and the Taj Mahal. The Taj Mahal is located in Agra, India. It was built by Emperor Shan Jahan in memory of his third wife which died during child birth of their 14th child. It is considered to be the seventh wonder of the world.  Mumbai is the capital of the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is the most populous city in India, second populous in the world, with a population of 14 million people. It is the richest city in India and has the highest GDP of any city in South West or Central Asia. Bollywood is a popular name for the film industry in India. It combines the name Hollywood and Bombay, the older name for the city Mumbai, where the Indian film industry is based. Bollywood is the largest flim producer in India and one of the largest centers of flim production in the world. It is only part of the Indian cinema. India films usually end with a big musical number.
I think the movie that we are watching in class, Slumdog Millionarie, portrays life in India very well and clearly. The main characters, Jamal, Latika, and Salim struggle living in the slums. Soon, they become beggars and are harmed to earn more money. Sadly, this does happen in present day India. There are many young people suffering and might suffer for their whole life. This movie does a good job showing how difficult it is to live in the slums.

Studing India Homework

Human Traffricking

India has many cruel and harass issues such as human trafficking, child exploitation, and forced labor. Human trafficking is like modern day slavery. People trick others into working for them under their harass conditions. Men, women, and children are forced to work in brick kilns, rice mills, agriculture, and embroidery factories. Women and girls are forced into marriage. Children are forced to work as factors workers, domestic servants, beggars, and agriculture workers.  They are trafficked for the purposes of labor and commercial sexual exploitation. Girls are sold at a young age and suffer with diseases such as HIDS or AIDS. India is a destination for women and girls from Nepal and Bangladesh. In India, there are millions of children from poor families who are subjected to forced labor. There are more than 250,000 Nepalese girls and women in Indian brothels. Brothels are any house, room, conveyance or place, or any portion of any house, room, conveyance or place, which is used for purposes of sexual exploitation or abuse for the gain of another person. They are either sold by their parents or tricked into employment.  Local recruiters sell them to brokers for 10 USD. Brokers sell them to brothel owners for 1,500. India has been placed on the US human trafficking tier 2 watch list.

Some say that the cause of human trafficking in India is because of lack of human rights and money. But what does the law say? Well, in1956 the Government of India passes the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act. It states that brothels are illegal but in practice they are restricted in a certain location, that sex work is neither legal nor illegal. Punishment for keeping a brothel or allowing premises to be used as a brothel is punishment up to 3 years. Human trafficking  is happening in India every day; many people are suffering and might suffer for the rest their lives.

4 Questions on video

Compare the motion picture industury in India and in the United States.

Hollywood produces 500 films per year on average and has a worldwide audience of 2.6 billion whereas Bollywood produces more than 1000 (not consistently) films every year and has a worldwide audience of 3 Billion. In terms of vieweship, Bollywood overtook Hollywood in 2004 and has been leading ever since. Bollywood made a revenue of $1.75 Billion in 2006(estimated to rise to $3.4 Billion in 2010) which is only half the revenue of what one Hollywood studio, Walt Disney made in 2006 – and that is saying a lot. However, while Hollywood’s market inside the US has almost saturated, India’s 500 million population under the age of 20 will ensure that the market inside India will grow exponentially in the coming years. *Bollywood is only part of the Indian industry. Bollywood makes more movies. America gets more money. Indian flims have musicals in the end.*

Lost Boys of Sudan Ending..

Today we finished The Lost Boys of Sudan. I liked how they started out with nothing and ended up with jobs, clothes, food, and some with family. This movie shows me that anything is possible if you work hard. Pather flew back to Africa to married his wife. He went to college and wants to open a school in Africa. John Blu Dau was reunited with his mother and sister. They were so happy to see each other since 17 yearsed . He continues to supports his family, went to college, is public speaking about his experience and wants a medlical clinic. Daniel was not as lucky, and didn't find any of his family members. However, he did attend community college.

The war in Sudan, which was being fought between the muslims in the north and the christians and animists in the south.

Lost Boys of Sudan Continued..

Today we discissed last nights homework. We also continued watching the lost boys of Sudan. Life is very hard and different for them. They hardly ever see their roomates because some of the boys have two, three jobs. One lost boy remembered the pain from the war and acted strangly on the bus and got arrested. They have to support the people in Sudan. They miss the paraiment groups they had, they have no time for them in america because of work. John (the tall guy) got a letter in the mail. It said that all his uncles and cousins were dead but his mom, brothers and sisters were alive. He was very happy. They invited their families in Sudan to America to help them. They were so happy to see everyone again but they also worried for them.

Part One: Imagine Your Future

There are a lot of things to think about when imaging your future. You will need to make many hard decisions like what to do for a living and where to live. I don’t know what I’m going pick as a career but I do enjoy art and math. My dad and most of my family are business owners of many restaurants. My mom does most of the accounting and banking for the restaurants. Maybe I would like to be an account, lawyer, or even go into business management. Two places where I would want to live in after graduation are Naples, Italy and North Carolina. I love the sun and I hate the cold and snow so I probably wouldn’t want to live in north. I also like to live near the water. I picked Naples, Italy because most of my family lives there. I grew up there as a baby and have a lot of memories. Our house there is right by the water; I could walk to the beach and be there in about ten minutes. I see my family every year during the summer time but it would be nice to live close to them. They don’t speak American, so they can’t move to the U.S. Europe has a good diet. They eat lots of fresh seafood from the Mediterranean and lots of steak. They don’t really have good health care system compared to the U.S.  A couple of my family members live in North Carolina. I usually visit them in the winter or spring. I really like it down there because everything looks more spaced out and seems calmer. The climate is warmer then Maryland. America also has good health care and job opportunities. The downside of leaving Maryland would probably be leaving where I spent most of my childhood and teenage years. If I do leave Maryland, I would also be leaving my family’s restaurants. I have a lot of memories that I would be leaving behind. But I would rather leave that behind to live with my family members that I only get to see once or twice a year. Many hard decisions are going to be made planning out the future. I'm glad I don't have to deciced now.

Part Two: Investigate Your Past

I was born in Towson, Maryland on July 2, 1996. I am the only one in my family who was born in America. Both of my sisters and parents were born in Naples, Italy. I’m 100% Italian. Most of my family lives in Naples, Italy. I only have two aunts in America. My aunt and her family live in North Carolina, we are very close. My other aunt and her family live in Pennsylvania but we don’t see each other often. I was baptized in Italy and spent three years there while my sister, Pia, was born. Then my family flew back to the states when I was about four or five. Italian was the first language I learned and then English. School was really hard for me because I couldn’t speak English clearly and had an accent. Now we visit my family in Italy every summer. My family came to the states for job opportunities. Most Italians own pizzerias, like the stereo-type of the fat man with a mustache holding a pizza. My family owns three restaurants. My grandparents, great grandparents, and so on didn’t own any restaurants. Instead, they would grow food on their farm and raise animals. Sometimes they would find wild bunnies on their farm and would catch them, kill them, and eat them. My grandparents still do that. I have memories of watching them run around trying to catch a bunny. When we visit them in the summer that’s what they cook for us, bunnies in tomatoes sauce, my favorite. Italians have good taste in food. We have the best pizza, lots of raw seafood, and raw pig’s mouth which is actually really good. Many Italians immigrated to America. Every year there is a reunion in New York for Italians, Italians come from all over America and some people fly from Italy to come. Italians are very friendly and welcoming people. I am very proud of my ancestry.
