There are many things I learned in this unit about India. I learned about the harass lifestyles they have living in the slums, dealing with poverty, and human trafficking. I also learned about some important locations in India such as Bollywood, Bombay/Mumbai, the Taj Mahal, and the Babri Mosque.
India is home to many, with about 1,173,108,018 people. It has the world’s second largest population. More than 75% of this population lives in poverty. The Human Development Report of the United Nations ranks the countries of the world by poverty. It ranked India 119th out of 169 countries. India also has many people living in slums or shanty towns. Shanty towns are slum settlements of impoverished people who live in dwellings made from scrap material often sheets of metal or plastic. Many slums do not have proper education. They have school in a small room which is crowed by students. Dharavi is the largest slum in India and in the world. Dharavi is one unending stretch of narrow dirty lanes, open sewers, and cramped huts. Sadly, it is home to more than one million people. Another cruel issue in India is human trafficking. Human trafficking is like modern day slavery. People trick others into working for them under their harass conditions. Men, women, and children are forced to work in brick kilns, rice mills, agriculture, and factories. Children are forced to work as factor works, domestic servants, and beggars. Beggars sit on the streets and beg for money. Some masters hurt their beggars so they would look more pathetic and get more money. Girls are sold at a young age and suffer with diseases such as HIDS or AIDS. Girls are sometimes forced into the circus and forced to marry their masters. They can even sold by their parents or masters if money if needed. As you can see, India is a very poor county and will do anything to earn some money.
We learned about important locations in India such as Bollywood, Bombay/Mumbai, the Babri Mosque, and the Taj Mahal. The Taj Mahal is located in Agra, India. It was built by Emperor Shan Jahan in memory of his third wife which died during child birth of their 14th child. It is considered to be the seventh wonder of the world. Mumbai is the capital of the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is the most populous city in India, second populous in the world, with a population of 14 million people. It is the richest city in India and has the highest GDP of any city in South West or Central Asia. Bollywood is a popular name for the film industry in India. It combines the name Hollywood and Bombay, the older name for the city Mumbai, where the Indian film industry is based. Bollywood is the largest flim producer in India and one of the largest centers of flim production in the world. It is only part of the Indian cinema. India films usually end with a big musical number.
I think the movie that we are watching in class, Slumdog Millionarie, portrays life in India very well and clearly. The main characters, Jamal, Latika, and Salim struggle living in the slums. Soon, they become beggars and are harmed to earn more money. Sadly, this does happen in present day India. There are many young people suffering and might suffer for their whole life. This movie does a good job showing how difficult it is to live in the slums.
